Questions and reports related to Sierra Nevada current and forecast conditions, as well as general precautions and safety information. Trail conditions, fire/smoke reports, mosquito reports, weather and snow conditions, stream crossing information, and more.
Hi All,
On Saturday June 24 2017, I day-hiked up Mitchell Peak in the Jennie Lakes Wilderness. The summit offered fantastic views into the Sierra high country and gave me an updated sense of snowmelt conditions. I posted photos below. Based on my summit view, north-facing slopes are totally melted below 9000' and mostly melted below 9500'. On south-facing slopes, the snowline is around 10,000', and in some places higher.
Also, the trail to Mitchell Peak summit (10,368') is clear of snow, except for a couple cute little patches. I easily reached the summit in running shoes without trail spikes or crampons.
