Re: Mapping software
The USGS store has all the USGS maps, including earlier versions, of every 15 and 7.5 minute USGS map available for free download.
https://store.usgs.gov/
Click on "Find a Map" "By Location." Then click on "US Map Locator Use the Map Locator Tool." That will being up a map of the U.S. From there, follow the instructions to zoom in and double click on the map y0u want and download it for free. Depending on the year, they will download as PDF or JPEG. I then edit and stitch them together in Photoshop to create printable maps to take on trips.
Also, the official Yosemite site has the USGS maps for Yosemite for download.

I don’t need a goal destination. I need a destination that meets my goals.

Re: Mapping software
It's $15 for the print copies. For digitally downloaded quads it's they're free. I like to use https://www.caltopo.com for making maps.

Re: Mapping software
My vote is for Caltopo. I can make maps scaled however I want them and covering the precise area that I want to cover. However, in order to make map sets bigger than 5 pages, you do have to pay for one of the premium memberships. It was well worth it for the convenience versus using USGS quad maps.
