Edison lake shuttle

I called the folks that are handling the Edison lake shuttle. It sounds like it is still up in the air as to whether it will be running after Labor Day. But even if it is running, I'm wondering how effective it is to get to the JMT. Considering the greatly reduced size of the lake and what seems might be a limited distance for shuttle travel, how effective is it to take the shuttle ? Seems like we could just walk on the trail along the lake to get to JMT.

Has anyone taken the ferry recently and could tell me how effective it was ?
