High Sierra Topix

Any one out there been following the write ups/review on a new camera that is about to be released, the Ricoh GR. It seems like it has great potential for a light weight pocket size camera(less than 9 ounces)and has an APS-C sensor for backpackers, wanting to shoot wide angle, and has a 28mm fixed lens. You can add an optional viewfinder, and a hood/filter adapter, and the weight is still under 11 ounces. Of course, it is not as good a camera as a pro/semi pro would carry, but 11 ounces is very attractive. The higher quality compacts like the Panasonic LX-7 and Canon G15 that are in this weight class have fixed lenses with very small sensors in comparison to this camera.

I may pick one up when it is available, and carry it and my Olympus OM-D on a couple of weekend trips. And try to take the same shot at wide angle 28mm, from a tripod with both cameras, and compare the difference. Not a scientific test, but it should give me some idea how they stack up against one another, for my use anyway.

Just noticed this old post. The Ricoh GR is an interesting compact camera I have been watching closely. It has a fervent fan base and seems to have attracted some very eclectic followers -- committed photographers who don't mind shooting in RAW and working in the digital darkroom. By all accounts, the latest GR is a great tool for street shooting. This camera is a much different one than the camera reviewed in Maverick's link above (that link is for a 2006 review of a much earlier model, with a small CCD sensor). Just found this thread. Seriously considering replacing my aging Lumix LX3 with this Ricoh. Anyone using this for landscape work in the Sierras?

Never tried it, though I was curious. The lack of image stabilization was an issue for me. The Ricoh would probably be great landscape shooting mounted to a tripod. Ended up getting an LX-7. Pretty good all round camera to carry, but not so good for landscape. Added the LV-7 viewfinder and a filter adapter. Pretty good macro, in my opinion.

Debating between:
A used LX7
A new Sony X100iii
The aforementioned Ricoh GR
A Canon G1X either the new Mark 2 or the version before with the viewfinder.
Or A Sigma DP1M

Mostly shoot landscapes but also interested in timelapses.

Weight and price were important to me. I bought a used LX-7 cheap($200). I had been carrying an Olympus OM-D kit, but after my back fusion surgery, during this recovery phase, I just need something light and all round. That new Sony X100 looks awesome though, and with a built in viewfinder, it is still only 8.5 oz. from what I saw on DP review. But I would like to see a few more reviews, and it out for a little while before taking the plunge. I think it may lack a good filter adapter , and I think that is important for High Sierra landscapes. But still, 8.5 ounces! and a small footprint, means only having to carry a small bag, very attractive, faster, wider lens, bigger than normal sensor. Might be hard to beat for a compact camera.

I've got an opportunity to buy a LX7 for less than $200 right now. Tempting but it's the smallest sensor of the bunch. Not sure it's a good choice for landscapes though. Ricoh has the biggest sensor which was what I was leaning towards.
