Very fine shot John of orange light glowing behind a nice pyramidal peak with a rock snow well fg. Skating in my little pond eh!

From late fall Nov 10, 2012, a shot for several years I've been hoping to nail during fall while dogwood leaves have changed at Calaveras Big Trees State Park given decent fresh snow with diffuse light. Of course the window for fall leaves is narrow, maybe a couple weeks at best and fall snows with low snow levels do not occur but once every few years. Finally after paying close attention to NWS forecast discussions over several days in advance, optimal situation occurred with maybe 8 to 10 inches fallen overnight. Snow was all the way down below 2k and the park is a bit below 6k.

Almost did not drive the 160 miles because after looking at the NWS satellite, had doubts I could reach the park before sun came out and was not in a mood to get up at 5am to gamble and drive. Often the cold dry air pushes behind storm fronts transitioning between snow falling so the window while clouds are still above after snow has lightened up may be brief. Down inside forests diffuse light is absolutely necessary to avoid contrast. The nice thing about snow is it also illuminates the ground level elements wonderfully though exposure especially with snow seasons is tricky and with the price of sheet film I usually only expose just one sheet on any shot. In fact another superb subject that morning ended up overexposed.

Nice shot Dave!

While not as uncommon to have "snow on color" events over here on the eastside, to have them at such low elevations on the westside is a real treat! I really kick myself for not making the trip to the westside for that storm. The photos I've seen that came out of Yosemite Valley that day are amazing!

Here's a couple from the eastside
