Another advantage of
Tom Harrison maps is elevations at mileage markers and lakes. Makes it much easier to quickly gauge a stretch without squinting at the contour intervals.

Ditto what everyone else has said here. NatGeo maps are less than desirable. In CA use
Tom Harrison maps. In Oregon and Washington there are lots of locally made maps that are also good. I think NatGeo trades too much on their good name when it comes to hiking maps. I also think they sucker out of staters due to their availability. Sometimes you have to do some digging to find that local map, but it will be a lot better in the long run and probably not cost any more. I've been able to order some local maps lately from Oregon and Washington and they were very good in comparison.
