Another thought - just check out the CREST bus from Mammoth to Bishop carefully as I'm pretty sure they don't run on the weekend - just in case that is relevant - so I think that means no public transport from Mammoth to Bishop on the weekend unless you want to pay for a private shuttle/taxi. We are doing that same public transport loop in reverse this year (from Bishop to the Valley).

Sorry about this, but on reflection I may have overestimated the duration of the bus trip, it probably SEEMED like 4 1/2 hours as I was bus sick... But it's a long ride, anyway!
