You might consider hiking to Forks of the Kern or to the Little Kern River Bridge and with more time to Kern Flat.

This is "saint" Diane, on the Little Kern.

Just stay low. I saw the Mokulumne at about 3,500' last Thursday, and it was pumping like a bad dog. The side creeks and east side will be dangerous. Tons of snow; on top of last year's big snow. Rock slides and a valanches will be a concern.

Think about the South Fk. of the Kern.

I normally do the South Fork of the Kern early season. I have not bothered this year because the water flows are very high. The high flows impact the fishing...there are many burned areas in that part of the Sierra, and snakes, but it is remote. It can be difficult to get info about what roads are open in the Southern Sierra from the ranger stations by phone. A "scouting trip" a week or two before going will help you plan more effectively. Same goes for Forks of the Kern, Kern Flat, etc; One weekend the gates will be locked, the next they will be open and the trail heads accessible.
