Can anyone suggest a good/the best Pack Trip Outfitter?

Post by JDinPas »

Searching the web, I can find several pack services running into the Eastern Sierra, but I would love to know if any of you can recommend one over the other. I have heard that Red's out of Mammoth is pretty reliable, but would appreciate any thoughts. This would be a short, first time family deal...gotta start them somewhere.

Also, I would appreciate suggestions on the better areas for newbies...we are open to either side of the Sierras. Fly fishing would be good.

Thanks for any info you can offer.

Hi JD,
No personal experience, but I have always been impressed with the way the outfit at the McGee Creek trailhead has looked. They maintain a well-kept stables-corral, and the horses/mules look fabulous (which is not always the case). The geological contrasts going up that canyon (it's a little past Convict Lake on the way from Mammoth to Bishop) are fantastic, and McGee Lakes are big enough that there will be plenty to do once they get you set up and not many other folks around. On the other hand, for the sheer spectacle of the scenery (and an easy ride) going out of Reds or Agnew Meadows to 1000 Island Lake probably cannot be beat. Again, 1000 Island should keep you happy for days, if not weeks.

I can recommend the Morgans at Bishop Creek Pack Outfitters. A long time family business in the Sierras, like most of these outfits. They service the Sabrina Basin, and Humphrey's Basin areas. The Sabrina Basin is a good choice for a first time family trip. A relatively short ride to an area with many lakes with good brook and rainbow trout fishing, plus day hike opportunities. If you haven't ridden much you'll appreciate the fact they use mules vs horses as riding stock. Much easier on you imho. Good Luck!
