Thanks Mav for sharing the news. Russ inspired me to get into backcountry fishing, and I'll always appreciate him for that.

I can't say it any better than Ed or a half dozen of y'all have done, but I do get the sense that HST will serve as a collective memory of the great ones like Mark and Russ. Cameron

Wow, I don't know how I missed this. This is so sad. He was such a huge part of this community. And, of course, he was such a huge part of the Topix fishing sub-group. There is no doubt true that as you get older you lose more and more of your peers/friends like this. Of course, he had his own original style which was such an integral part of the Topix experience. He was also among the even smaller Topix sub-group that styled themselves the Old Farts and I had the pleasure of meeting him at one of their meet ups at Lower Chain Lake, although I did not camp with them (dayhiked to meet them). It was fun to be able to meet someone in person that I had followed for so long here. He will certainly be missed here.

Just saw this. RLOWN had his own unique way of saying things and I miss his replies. I will always remember his fishing stories about the brookies in Tomahawk and how pissed off he was that the DFG removed his favorite lunker brookies from Upper Mattie. Also how he was determined to catch that lunker golden from Puppet. RIP my friend. HST will not be the same without you.

One of the early contributors to this page. Certainly loved backcountry fishing and the Sierra. Tight lines Russ. RIP.
