Horseshoe Meadows Bear Issues

Inyo NF:
Horseshoe Meadows has seen an increase in black bear presence recently. One bear tried tearing open a vehicle to get to the food inside.
To illustrate the volume of trash being removed by our recreation staff and cooperators from this area, pictured below is the load of trash being removed by truck about twice per week – yikes!

We know you want to enjoy our forest, but do your part to pack out what you pack in, and try to generate as little waste as possible. Bring reusables instead of disposables, and be sure to only bring food (and any other scented items or the containers that hold these items) that you know will fit inside the bear boxes.

Items that must be secured in the bear boxes include:
- food sealed in jars, cans, or foil packs
- Non food items: plastic bottles, water bottles, coffee mugs, pet food, empty cans, trash, wrappers, cosmetics, grocery bags, boxes, and ice chests

Do not leave these items in your car or tent. Bears will break in to obtain them.
