"welded" seams

I remember when "welded seams" were the rage- the early designs did not always work well. I recall a few seam failures.
My daughter gave me some Arc-Terex hiking pants, probably quite old- had been sitting in her closet a while. I just took them out to try on and consider using and I noticed a "welded seam" on a pocket (only pockets were welded). Well, all could easily be pulled off! I sewed in new pockets.
Has anyone else experienced this? I was surprised because Arc-Terex is a high quality and very expensive brand.
I think welded seams were/are also used on tents.
