Hi All,
My wife and I will be spending a few days late Sept up near Mendocino for a little R&R, or should I say a little wine and food and sightseeing in general. I want to carve out a portion of one of our days to do a nice little day hike thru some redwoods. Being pure Southern CA beach guy, I really want to start getting to know all that arboristic (just made that word up) beauty I see in photos. Not sure if there is an A list of places in the area or ones to avoid. We are staying in Boonville but will be touring around the general area between there and the coast. Any input on nice easy hikes through a beautiful grove appreciated.
Andy

There are not huge redwood groves in Mendocino...you might have better luck staying on 101 and heading north to do that. The Botanical Gardens in Fort Bragg are really beautiful and worth a visit. But if you don't want redwoods, both the Mendocino Headlands and the Russian Gulch State Parks have some nice trails...

Hendy Woods has some nice easy trails which might fit the bill if you don't want to do anything too strenuous. The redwoods aren't the biggest, but they're still plenty big. Eight miles from Boonville.

Thanks for input. I have stumbled across a very aptly named website that looks to be quite a nice reference for folks looking to do the same thing around the state. amazing the specifics you can find on the web:

Hendy Woods State Park it was. Arrived a little before 8:00 am and the ranger welcomed us and let us know that some of the trees are over 1,200 years old. Great little stroll through a nice small grove. Not huge trees in circumference but so tall. Definitely not a hike, just a pleasant couple of miles on flat trails in a deep dark forest. Wets the appetite to see more of the coastal redwood forest.
Oh by the way, Anderson valley is a great little spot to tour and taste vino if you are into that.
