Who needs a campfire?

We were stunned to see this particular RV in a Page, Arizona Campground, overlooking the red sandstone and sky blue waters of Lake Powell. Yes, this is a camper who has rigged a video projector to his RV so that he and his kids can watch movies instead of look at the stars. Which makes you wonder why they don't just stay home and do the same thing.

Amazing.

Why does it bother you what they do when they go camping?

I hate people having fun, aren't they the worst?

I think the point is that lighting up the outside of your camper for movies does impact your neighbors. I have no problem with them watching movies inside or not watching stars, but the glare let alone the sound is intrusive. Obviously they did this at night, and this time of year dark night is 10PM. It is like people playing loud music - great if you agree with their taste in music as well as their bedtime hours, but very grating if you do not.

The sound and light from an impromptu drive-in theatre would keep me up if they were anywhere near me. Campgrounds should be dim lights, whispered voices after 10pm. I've been kept up past midnight by far too many schlitzed college students and rip-roaring family reunions... that is one reason I try to avoid pretty much any front-country campground in season.

This was in the next campground loop, directly facing our campsite. So we had plenty of local illumination when the stars came out. They turned it off about 10 p.m. But by that time, we were in bed...

Winner.

Who knew that sleeping with your neighbors 10 feet away from you with no walls could be uncomfortable O_o? I feel like this one's on you Balzaccomm, don't jump in a pool and complain about getting wet. People are gonna be annoying, that's unavoidable. What you do is within your control.

Fair enough. I've been camping for more than sixty years and never seen anything like it, but I am also first to admit that I'm about that many years behind the latest technology...

It does remind me of a bus trip I took forty-five years ago across the north end of Scotland. As we drove through a rainstorm we passed a guy riding a bicycle in full kilt and regalia with a banjo strapped to his back. The bus driver and I took this in, and then the driver turned to me and said with a wink: "Ach, it's amazin' what you'll see when you haven't got yer gun..."
