Of the 25 bat species that live in California, 17 are found in Yosemite: https://www.yosemiteconservancy.org/blo ... -love-bats

I like the fact that one or more of the species of bats in Yosemite produce chirps that are audible to human ears. They've lulled me to sleep many nights.

Outside of Yose, they like to swarm over the campfire to pick up the skeeters.. Fun to watch.

I have a question for those in the community with knowledge of bat behavior. While camped at the junction of the JMT and Goddard Canyon (elev. ~8500 feet), I strolled out to the bridge over the San Joaquin River to take in the bats at dusk. For some reason, the medium sized brown bats were feeding above the river at approximately 75-150 feet (my guess) and not coming down nearer the ground, as I've seen much more often, to feed on mosquitoes, et al.

Anyone know what insects they might be feeding on 100 feet up?
