Hoover Wilderness Anyone?

Post by norak »

Has anyone been to the Hoover Wilderness recently? We're thinking of going in from Virginia Lakes (Summit Lake, East Lake, etc.) this Wednesday (8/2) for three nights and wondered about snow levels & creek crossings. Had originally planned to go to the Trinity Alps but a heatwave is forecast and it will be in the upper 90's even at altitude... The Bridgeport ranger station says still some snow on the ground but the trails and passes are passable - but she didn't have much detailed info, especially about the creek crossings

Thanks.

You may want to inquire on the stream crossing conditions of the East Fork Green Creek between Hoover Lakes and Gilman Lake (or in that vicinity). Certain times of the year the stream crossings can be above waist deep. From the trail just before you reach Summit Lake at the pass you can look down at the trail to Hoover lakes.

You may also contact Ken's Sporting Goods on Hi Way 395 at 258 Main St. in downtown Bridgeport. Phone number 1-760-932-7707. A well stocked fishing supply store, with very well informed personnel knowing about the Bridgeport area (Hoover Wilderness).

We were up at Anna Lake (~10500') in Hoover last weekend and it was still mostly iced over, with snow on the way up starting around 9200'. Microspikes were helpful for some parts.

I'm not sure how it compares to the streams in your area of interest, but crossing the Little Walker River on our way to Anna wasn't bad, a little over knee deep with moderate whitewater / flow.
