Of course it's not designed for backpacking. Here's some more information I got from their customer service, concerning locks, dimensions, handles.

The 35 is not lockable but does have the latches as seen in the images. 85 and 120 are lockable

Internal dimensions
Frosty 35 - 17.8" x 9.3" x 10.2"
Frosty 45 - 20.2" X 10.1" X 11.5"
Frosty 65 - 24.8" x12.3" x 13"
Frosty 85 - 25.6" x 13.5" x 12.3"
Frosty 110 - 29.5" x 14.7" x 15.6"

Yes it does have solid handles on the side if you don't want to use the rope handle.

Just some more information about these coolers.

I wouldn't bother with anything but the list maintained by Yosemite (or the park in which you intend to use the "bear resistant" whatever) when purchasing something like that. Food storage regulations are quite variable and sometimes really specific to locality -- Bear Vaults for example are not always the best option for very specific places, because a very few individual bears can get them open.
