OK, I left myself open for that one!!!!
Actually, Mahogany Flats is where we camped the first night. Then we moved down past the charcoal kilns to Wildrose cg after Telescope. That's the one we camped at the second night. Ridgeline and Trailbud spent the night in the car. Like I said, not impressed. Looked like an ex RV campground to me; probably what it's meant for. If you remember, Snowy, not really any areas you can pitch a tent except out among the vehicles. Let's try for another one.

Yes you did!
There's an "open" area but its a farther drive. No toilets. No firepits. And I'm not sure what condition the road is in. I know I can drive it.
I think you're being a little too picky!
I'm not used to being in campgrounds and its been awhile since I've paid for one. I like the more primitive ones.

Keep in mind that any place in Death Valley can have killer winds. Once at Wildrose, the winds were really bad in the morning, so I lined the inside of my tent with rocks to make sure it didn't go anywhere while I was out doing Telescope Peak. Well, when I got back I discovered that the tent indeed didn't go anywhere. However, one of the poles broke!
My second worst experience in Death Valley.

I broke a tent pole in a sandstorm near Stovepipe Wells once - it's pretty bad being near the sand dunes when the winds pick up.

Uh... driving my car off the road, rolling over and ending upside down in a ditch. Did that in '87, a few days after my birthday and a week before I was fired from my job. Other than that, it was a great trip!

I can remember up on Irvine with a friend - I watched him step off a rock and sink in snow to his waist - being the smart guy that I was I picked a diffferent place to step off. Poof - I sank up to my neck - the only help my friend could offer was to break out his camera
time to move these stories to their own new thread I think
