Anyone have any DIY ideas for this? Or is it not worth the extra weight?

If I were to get seriously interested in baking when backpacking I think I would look for a round wire trivet. That could be placed in my 10" aluminum skillet that I carry for cooking fish where fires are not permitted. I could cover the trivet with foil that I always carry to cook fish in then could place foil on the trivet, then biscuit dough on the foil then cover the skillet with foil to create a small oven. For something like a cobbler I would fill the lid of my pot (which is a little over an inch deep) with the ingredients then place it on the uncovered trivet and again place foil over the pan. But when you are moving camp each day and fishing when you aren't moving that is pretty complex cooking for me. Net weight added should be about 3 oz. compared to my usual cooking outfit.

I've only tried the occasional wet bake when I'm feeling in the mood to experiment, that usually requires a bit planning beforehand...ingredients & extra utensils wise.

A couple of attempts at sticky date pudding & bread...

Or you can make do with a pot, home made trivet, smaller pot/foil inside bigger pot,
topped off with a flat lid/foil/frying pan....

There's a myriad of combo's out there from a reflective hood to fully fledge titanium ovens....I'm
sure you could get a few ideas from these & make your own...depends how much love to bake. ;)

There is baking on a campfire, and baking with a stove. There are also some solar bakers.

If using a campfire you simply need to bring a lid for a frying pan, and put a wing-nut on the top so you can grip it with pliers, and then bake on coals, with some thrown on top. Works well.

It is trickier on a stove to keep things from burning. There is where you need those fancier devices.

I tried to bake biscuits in my clear plastic Bear Vault. I think it may have worked had I left it in longer and the air temperature were warmer. I bet you could make a solar type oven out of aluminum foil, to be used inside a Bear Vault!

Just to clarify... (return the favor) - anything past boiling water seriously challanges the OldRanger's backcountry cooking abilities. Baking? Not a chance.

Give OR a break. He made that tasty meal for us at Vandeberg Lk. I remember a tasty pasta-ish, pasty dish, followed by the volcano cake (with real volcanoes!) Probably had to buy a new pot after that, but it was an experiment. Came with a side of ash, raspberry topping and everything. No, i didn't have any of the "cake."

That volcano cake could have used an oven or more indirect heat, like that flat stone concept brought up earlier!
