chulavista;

Thanks for that. Pretty crazy that a spot fire could blow up to that inferno. I was in the back country near Mammoth from Thursday 9/4 through Sunday 9/7, with clear skies and relatively calm winds, until Saturday afternoon/evening when the wind really came up. Sunday morning as I hiked out, the wind was raging.

Hiking from Merced Lake to LYV on Friday, August 29, my wife and I noticed some smoke. When we got to LYV, the rangers came and checked permits. We asked about the smoke and they said it was in the Mt. Starr King area, that it was from a lightning strike a few weeks earlier, that it was creeping, and that they were keeping an eye on it.

A fire near Conway Summit north of Lee Vining has HWY 395 closed: http://www.sierrawave.net/31895/conway- ... ghway-395/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Edit: Alternating one way traffic is now being allowed through.

Mammoth Lakes 9/19...
Awoke to cooler temps (highs in the low 60's today) and a smokey haze seen everywhere, especially over the Crest.
Fall has reared it's head and smoke from the many Sierra fires is quite evident here today.
BTW, fishing up at George yesterday, the change in colors is everywhere.

The King Fire has resulted in a complete closure of the Desolation Wilderness which is to the fire's east. While crews have contained the southern edge of the fire to keep it away from Pollock Pines and Highway 50, it appears to be spreading unchecked to the north.

It has a fair ways to burn to get to some of the popular High Sierra Topix destinations such as Icehouse Reservoir and further yet for Wright's lake, but it bears watching.

Yesterday afternoon the whole Tahoe basin was socked in with smoke; visibility less than 100 yards.

Has anyone been up to Desolation/Tahoe in the last couple of days? Was planning a quick trip to Lyons Lake over the weekend and wondering if it is smoky.

Thanks!
