A quick perusal of the obvious source, Place Names of the Sierra Nevada, says Bear. However, since Deer, Cold, and Lost aren't in there except for a couple of times and not for places I'm familiar with, tells me maybe Peter Browning stuck with the ones that had a story he was able to track down. While I suspect Bear is right (especially if you count all the Big Bear, Little Bear, etc), the others can't be ruled out. Frankly, unless someone is bored enough and has a lot of free time to get out all the maps, peruse them, and count the names, I don't think we'll ever know. Unless, of course, someone has already done exactly that on another website.

I've heard that the word "squaw" is very common as a placename, perhaps not just in the Sierra, but all over California, much to the chagrin of some folks.
