Fellow Photographers,

What are some of your favorite lenses to take with you on your hikes, day or overnight? I currently am using a 24-105 F/4L IS, and a 70-200mm F/4L with a 5D3, but am looking for something that might be a little wider. Additionally a 300mm or 400mm for bird/wildlife.

What do you all use?

The 17-40 has worked fine for me on the wide end, with that said if Canon finally
came out with a 14-24, or wider, that rivaled Nikon's, and with the same great level of
performance, and without the flare issues, it would be bought, no matter the price.
My 100-400 is my long lens which shares the company of my 14mm, 17-40, 70-200,
and 24-105 lenses. This lens work for some birds/animals but is a little to slow, a
2.8 lens would be better but that would make it weight a ton. The new 200-400 looks
interesting, but if you are dayhiking a 400 DO, 300 2.8 (with extender), or 500 4.0 would
be the ticket for animals and especially birds. Purchasing a 300 or 500, version I, used if
you want a less expensive way to own one.

I've been eyeing a 300 for the IS factor, but still wonder about the room. I guess an extender could be used if need be.

I was looking at possibly getting the Canon 16-35 down the road, but I'll have time to think of something ultra wide.

The 16-35 is good, but not great, especially is you add in the cost difference compared
to the 17-40. If you absolutely need the 2.8, then it is your widest Canon option, but
for landscape 2.8 is rarely necessary unless you are into night landscape photo's which
the Rokinon 14mm 2.8 is perfect for the price.

I was looking at the Rokinon being it's like $1,200 cheaper, but I was thinking about eventual wedding photography, and the 16-35 could be useful for some lowlight, wide shots. I might still do it simply for the price.

Decisions decisions.

Yeah, for wedding photo's the 16-35 makes much more sense, the Rokinon for the
price would still make for a fun lens if you have the extra money.

You might be able to answer this question, considering it's something I just thought about and am in a bit fuss over.

I was looking at a Lowepro Trekker 400AW to carry my girlfriend and I's camera equipment, which can be done for day hikes, but for overnight hikes it seems that's not going to work if I'm carrying the backpack with all our stuff.

I want to bring a wide angle as well as a 300, plus she'll want her 100 with her DSLR. Do they make any front bags that are big enough to handle that? Will we need to split them up? Everything I looked at says front bags can hold a 70-200, but nothing bigger. Am I pushing it with the 300?
