I have done the Garnet lake outlet trail that runs down towards the San Joaquin river and i can't imagine it with a ton of snow on it. It's pretty steep from what I remember. Also ended up having to stay on the west side of it until I met up with the Shadow Lake trail. Still have no idea how you get across it where the Garnet Lake outlet trail supposedly meets the River trail.

I'll look forward to hearing the trip reports as we have a permit reservation for the Ediza-Thousand Island route from August 5th-8th. I will be watching those skeeter reports but am already anticipating heavy amounts to build up in the next 2-1/2 weeks. Thanks in advance to anyone who has more info to post on this.

We're up there a week after Hiker 97, although anticipating a shorter route to 1000 Isle for shakedown/intro purposes. We intend either the high route or River Trail to Thousand Island Lake, a day of downtime to visit Ruby, Emerald and Garnet, then back out the way we came in.

The beta from those of you up there is fantastic. Thank you, and keep it up!

Here's a pic from June 14 2009. The lifts were running for the last day at Mammoth the day this was taken. I didn't have any trouble getting to 1000 Is., there was trail or boot track the whole way. Finding a dry camp spot on ledges above the lake was no problem. I would guess by now this years conditions would be more favorable than this, but I have not been there this year.

That's a spectacular photo, by the way...

Here's hoping our intrepid OP is out there, right now, in great conditions (and a camera). It should be high 70's up there.
