Thanks, BS! and Mountaineer, BEAUTIFUL sunrise! We were undecided that morning on what to do because of the weather, and missed the sunrise! We decided the Sierra hike planned would be too cold and windy, so our decision to hike Mono Craters was decided Sat morning!

With high winds, and Hwys 14 and 395 closed, we weren’t sure where we were hiking and who would make it. We looked thru Zdon’s book, and picked a peak in DV. Tom Gossett drove out Sat night, but waited when the hwy closed. After a few hours of watching stuff getting blown across the highway, he went home. In the morning, Tomcat drove up to meet us. The weather had calmed down by then. New area and new peak for all.

What a fun Birthday Weekend! Looks like you all had a great time, albeit some of the Mono Crater pictures looked pretty cold and windy. Pretty area though.

Glad you had a fun birthday weekend Cori!! :birthday

If there is ever anybody I was envious of it would be Snowy...she is ALWAYS doing something in the mountains. I get up there 3-4 times a year nowadays. :crybaby:

A month late, but here it is . . . .

Monday, 22 October 2007 (day 4 of 4)
Pyramid Peak (11,724') south of Mammoth Lakes

On my 51st birthday, my plan was to climb Pyramid Peak just south of Mammoth Lakes. I didn't find any beta on this peak, and chose a route by looking at a map. It was tougher than expected with manzanita and big boulders and no sign of a use trail. I got into some deep snow between boulders, lost elevation to get around, thought about how long it would take me from where I was to summit, the drive home and getting to work on time, and gave up on summitting. I'll try a different way next time.

I took a geography class during the winter session and whenever I see pictures of rocks, I tend to try and figure out what types of rocks they are, how they were formed, and where they came from. Thanks alot Mr. Powell :p . The pictures were beautiful.
