Looks a great hike everyone! Tom what was Surprise Canyon like? That has been on my do do hikes for many years....I have seen pictures of it in the Spring and it looks like a paradise with the water flowing over the rocks

Anita - Surprise Canyon is reported 6 miles from Novak Camp to Panamint City. the waterfalls after easy to hike - I still have trouble imaging people driving up there - although you can still see the evidence that the road was cared for in a different way.

route finding through the two springs is a little more difficult with some parts of straight bushwhackin. here is the clearest signs of what the flash floods have done to the former road beds.

the accomodations at Panamint City were nice - wish I had more time to explore more. but living close like I do I can schedule other trips to the area. I even entertained the idea of a Telescope to Panamint City hike - that would be a fun loop.
