Massive rockfall down the west face of Clouds Rest -Yosemite

Grab your bear can or camp chair, kick your feet up and chew the fat about anything Sierra Nevada related that doesn't quite fit in any of the other forums. Within reason, (and the HST rules and guidelines) this is also an anything goes forum. Tell stories, discuss wilderness issues, music, or whatever else the High Sierra stirs up in your mind.

Massive rockfall down the west face of Clouds Rest -Yosemite

Post by FeetFirst »

Back on June 14th there was a massive rockfall down the west face of Clouds Rest. Reported by Rock and Ice here: http://www.rockandice.com/lates-news/ma ... aya-canyon

Can you image being on your way up when things started to loosen up?!
I'm still rather convinced that you can achieve more than you've ever dreamed of if you just lower your standards.

Yikes! Pretty crazy to seeing those photos (and progression of photos in the video).

I remember a few years ago camped at the top of Snow Creek, waking in the middle of the night to a thunderous roar echoing through the canyon. Given the time of year (late spring) I chalked it up to a snow avalanche further up Tenaya. Only when hiking down did I realize a chunk of half dome had fallen off that night. Kind of puts things in perspective.

This is pretty freaky, check out this memo by Yosemite NPS, and especially the date. http://www.nps.gov/yose/learn/news/rockfallrisk2012.htm

I don't give out specific route information, my belief is that it takes away from the whole adventure spirit of a trip, if you need every inch planned out, you'll have to get that from someone else.
