Tioga Road/Pass 2015 opening date

Post by seanr »

NPS is predicting mid-April opening of the Tioga Pass Road. It hasn't opened that early in nearly forty years. http://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/tioga.htm

I've got a wedding to attend nearby in early April. I wish for a good dumping of snow to slow things down, but if it ends up opening to cyclists when I'm there, I may not be able to resist the opportunity!

Tioga Road
The road remains closed to all pedestrian and bicycle traffic Monday through Friday due to ongoing construction. The road is closed to vehicles.

What construction are they doing?

The construction is explained in the link below as road rehabilitation. Other significant construction delay schedules are also mentioned, including tunnel work on Big Oak Flat Road (important if visiting Y. Valley from Northern CA before Memorial Day Weekend) and upcoming Mariposa Grove closure details. I experienced some long delays on Tioga Road late on weeknights last summer. They were letting traffic through on the hour. It appears the delay schedule for Tioga Road is the same as last year.

As far as the original link that I posted and interpreted as an April 15 full road opening prediction, I have now seen three different sets of details posted by NPS in the past week. Now the construction and cycling details have been added, but it has reverted back to clearly stating plowing won't even begin until April 15th, which is the standard date to begin plowing. I no longer have my hopes up for early April cycling to Tuolumne Meadows and Tioga Pass, nor an easy drive to the Eastside from western Yosemite. If things happen faster than is currently posted by NPS, I'll be pleasantly surprised.

It looks like May 1st will be the likely opening day for Tioga Pass.

The Lee Vining side will likely open tomorrow late afternoon and Sonora Pass may open by Friday at noon:

So, both Sonora Pass and Tioga Pass areas may be accessible this weekend. Bridgeport anyone? :D

Tioga was scheduled to be open this weekend but the storm has pushed things back a bit.

I don't give out specific route information, my belief is that it takes away from the whole adventure spirit of a trip, if you need every inch planned out, you'll have to get that from someone else.
