tioga pass - open!

Post by markskor »

Mono County Tourism is reporting that Hwy 120 will open to the Yosemite NP east entrance gate today by 5pm. And Sonora Pass is scheduled to open by noon on Friday.

And now for the requisite historical opening/closing dates - if the park gets the westside cleared before May 2, 2015 will be the earliest date per this chart:

The gate on the east side generally gets opened annually for the fishing season opener the last weekend of April, but obviously there usually is more snow on the surrounding terrain than this year. Except for some days following last week's storm, the road has been basically dry to the top on the east side since late March.

The west side and the Tioga Pass eastern national park gate have opened in April some years in the more distant past. A road construction project (and not wanting to manage visitation) is keeping it closed until May this year despite the lack of snow.

To be clear, you can't drive anywhere on Tioga Pass Road except east of the national park until around May 1st, 2015. Bicycles are often allowed for a period of time prior to the automobile opening, but that is somewhat in question this year due to construction. You can ski it or walk it.
The NPS has pages regarding all this that are linked in the Transportation To & From sub-forum on HST.
