Park Service Sound Map

Grab your bear can or camp chair, kick your feet up and chew the fat about anything Sierra Nevada related that doesn't quite fit in any of the other forums. Within reason, (and the HST rules and guidelines) this is also an anything goes forum. Tell stories, discuss wilderness issues, music, or whatever else the High Sierra stirs up in your mind.

Park Service Sound Map

Post by BSquared »

A coast-to-coast picture of America's cacophony of sounds
New National Park Service map draws the United States' summer soundscape

I'd post the text of this article here, but the graphic is so compelling that I'm going to post a link instead:

Doubtful the NPS will be able to do anything about airplanes flying over. But they should fix that part of the map just for the Yose flyover flight paths.

Interesting. When I first saw the map I thought it was from the space shuttle at night....
Makes sense that large cities = lots of light at night and also lots of noise.

I do have a problem with the comparison between the two maps. How do you compare airplane or chainsaw noise against a babbling brook or river? Brook and river don't bother me. And where did they get their "without people" data? I can sit back on the shore of Evelyn lk in Yose and count the planes coming into SFO spaced 2 minutes apart until 11pm PST. It's not ok. Go over Highway 80.

This is a science magazine and it doesn't know the difference between "average" and "median?"
The map shows an average volume, the sound level that’s exceeded about half the time at particular spots.
