Bighorn Sheep

Post by maverick »

Has anyone seen bighorn sheep in the Crater Pass area? If yes, what
time of the year?
This is an area that is supposedly frequented by these majestic
animals and is not restricted by the NPS, if I read the park restrictions
correctly!
Thanks

Crater Pass & Sheep

Post by gdurkee »

Bighorn Sheep don't get over to Crater Pass area too much. They are east of the JMT on Mt. Wynn and south of there along the crest to Mt. Gould. Within Sequoia and Kings Parks, there's no restrictions on where you can hike because of sheep habitat. The restrictions are in the Inyo Forest.

The best place to see bighorn sheep is in September above Rae Lakes and into 60 Lakes Basin. Still unusual to see them, but if it's gonna happen, you've got a better chance there than anywhere. The main thing is to keep a fair distance and don't spook them by getting above them. They like to have the high ground.

Good luck.
