2014 Mosquito Reports

Post by maverick »

1 - No mosquitoes or if there are some, but not biting yet (Blue)
2 - Very light during the day, moderate at dawn and dusk (Green)
3 - Moderate during the day, heavy at dawn and dusk (Yellow)
4 - Heavy during the day, heavy at dawn and dusk (Orange)
5 - Unbearable all day, no breaks, cannot eat outside of tent. If you stop, hundreds
will descend on you; when looking thru a camera viewfinder, you see more skeeters than
lake. If you slapped your arm, you'd smear blood from all the dead gorged bodies (Red)

Please do not post questions or ask about a particular area in this thread. Thanks

I don't give out specific route information, my belief is that it takes away from the whole adventure spirit of a trip, if you need every inch planned out, you'll have to get that from someone else.

Bubbs Creek 5/18

Post by astrogerly »

5/18: Roads End/Bubbs Creek to Mist Falls -> between 1 and 2. Started noticing them 1/2 mile or so before the trail junction. Most were just annoying. Some started biting as we got closer to the bridge.

Lake Aloha and surrounding, 5/17.

I think I saw one mosquito the entire day (so a 1). Still quite a few patches of snow along the trail.

May 25 Tenaya Lake to sunrise trail

Post by Bargy »

Along the trail 1-2. At the Tenaya Lake outlet crossing (where the water is above the boulders, so you have to take your boots/socks off to wade) they are a biting 2 just waiting for victims. Many people were running up the trail barefooted to get away from the critters before stopping to put footware back on.

North Fork Big Pine - 0

The first night there were basically no bugs at all.

Second night I had probably 20 land on me throughout the evening. None were biting yet though. Pretty surprising given that the nearby lake was nearly completely frozen over.
