Day hiking to Kearsarge 5/17

Post by overheadx2 »

The wife and I camped at grays meadow this weekend to do some fishing and day hikes (she likes a shower and a bed at night). Hiked to Robinson lake on Friday and ended up post holing about half the distance to the lake. Saturday we made it to kearsarge pass with the trail being pretty much wide open to the pass. Surprised at the amount of folks hiking over the pass to the back country. Also surprised to meet so many PCT hikers. Fishing was good at the lower Gilbert and flower lakes. Heart and pot hole were iced over and very difficult to get to. The snow and ice are melting fast.

Thanks for the info. I was planning on day hiking to Robinson in 2 weeks, but now I'm having second thoughts. Doesn't seem like it will have melted out by then. How deep was it?

The snow was melting fast so Robinson should be fine in 2 weeks. We cut a trail, and since onion valley campground is set to open for Memorial Day, the trail should get a lot of use and be nice and packed like Kearsarge. I don't have any pics of Kearsarge, but it was no problem in trail runners. There were several large patches of snow, but well worn and melting really fast. On Friday while getting started on Robinson Lake, we saw about 20 hikers, and Saturday we saw about 30 hikers on the Kearsarge trail so it is really getting used.

I don't give out specific route information, my belief is that it takes away from the whole adventure spirit of a trip, if you need every inch planned out, you'll have to get that from someone else.

Here are a few photos of the trip.
Kearsarge pass. Hard to believe, but at least 7 hikers going up and down

I was a little lighter so I would make it over a patch of snow about 50% of the time and as my heavier cousin would follow, he kept going through. After a while it became funny to every one but him.
