New online national forest maps with trail mileages, road in

Post by Joseph »

These online maps are now ready for almost all of the national forests in California, Oregon and Washington. Here are the links:
http://www.mappingsupport.com/p/gmap4_usfs_maps.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Please read the Tips. There is a link to the tips in the upper left corner of each map.

To the best of my knowledge these are the only free online maps that show trail mileages without making you click anything.

They are also the only online maps that let you see the forest service roads that are open and roads that are closed by toggling those layers on and off.

Just replied over at BPL...

Looks very useful. I even see a couple of pretty obscure trails that I didn't think most knew about. Thanks again.
I'm still rather convinced that you can achieve more than you've ever dreamed of if you just lower your standards.

Thanks for the info and the link. I'm just starting to learn about the recreation available in the San Diego County portions of the Cleveland National Forest. This will help me get familiar with what's available in my new neck of the woods.

My earlier post claimed that the maps show data about open and closed forest service roads.
That data is no longer on the maps.

Yes, the data exists.
No, the forest service will not let me show it to you.

If you think this does not make a lot of sense, then I agree with you.

I don't give out specific route information, my belief is that it takes away from the whole adventure spirit of a trip, if you need every inch planned out, you'll have to get that from someone else.

They are still classifying the roads, the data is not perfect, the big paper travel plan maps are the official maps, yadda yadda yadda.

Actually my sense is that at some unknown time in the future that open/closed road data will be 'blessed' by forest service management and made available for 3rd party software to display. But I have no idea when that will happen.
