I don't give out specific route information, my belief is that it takes away from the whole adventure spirit of a trip, if you need every inch planned out, you'll have to get that from someone else.

Using that excellent map that Joseph provided has proven to be gut wrenching for me. I discovered I could follow the progress of the fires in Idaho, too, and can clearly see some backpacking haunts from my past being torched.

Sadly, there are many more, too. I am dearly hoping that Kibbie won't be next on my list of departed friends.

I added the current hot spot data to the online map link that I posted earlier. This likely shows the areas where the fire is trying to expand.

See the "About" link in the upper left corner of the map for more information.

Drove around the fire via Sonora poss yesterday on my way back from Bishop...the smoke started around Bridgeport and got much thicker around the 108/395 intersection. Super smokey at Leavitt meadows and on up the pass...you could barely make out the mountains around you. Thickest smoke was on the west side of the pass: absolutely no visibility up the canyon from Kennedy meadows. The sunshine was deep red from being filtered through the smoke...beautiful, but also ominous. Things cleared up to a light haze around Strawberry.

Dozens and dozens of engines and firefighters all along 108 in the little towns leading down to the valley. Seemed like they were prepping for a big push from that side of the fire. Best of luck to them all.

I just got back from Deadman canyon. August 22-25 Twin lakes->Silliman Pass->Sugar Loaf->Deadman Canyon->Elizabeth Pass->High Sierra trail to Crescent Meadow.

No smoke anywhere to be seen when I was out. Ran into some rangers on patrol and they were worried about smoke, asking where I had been and if there was smoke. They seemed surprised when I said there was no smoke in the areas. The High Sierra Trail was closed around Chagoopa due to fire while I was out.

Chagoopa Fire in Sequoia NP

Post by maverick »

SEKI Advisory:
ADVISORIES: The switchback section of the High Sierra Trail on the Chagoopa Plateau
has been been crossed by the Chagoopa Fire. The Chagoopa Fire is approximately 15
acres in size as of 8/25. Hikers should plan to be escorted through the fire area. These
escorts will likely be in the morning or when fire behavior allows. Hikers should plan
on being delayed for several hours.

The Fish Fire, located on the Sequoia National Forest south of the parks, has grown to approximately 1,000 acres. Smoke from this fire is drifting into Sequoia National park,
especially along the Kern River drainage. Hikers planning on traveling in this area
should be aware that conditions may be extremely smokey and should consider
changing their route. Visit http://inciweb.nwct.gov/incident/3701" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; for more
information about this fire.

All of these fires got me wondering where Rogue was. From his original itinerary, it seems he's probably somewhere around Dusy Basin.
If you don't know where you're going, then any path will get you there.

Yose has a closure map due to Rim: http://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/u ... 082613.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Mostly obvious other than out of the Glen.

Rim Fire is now the largest ever in the Sierra Nevada, and still only 20% contained:
