Eastern Sierra Fall Colors 9/23

Post by ifernau »

Saturday 9/23, I began a three day trip in search for Fall Colors. Started with the Dunderberg Meadows Road and found a spectrum of colors, but also a lot of green as well as brown spots and black leaves. Also some bare trees already. The meadow itself is still mostly green. When I started to shoot it was cold…..26F, but no wind. It got a little breezy after sunrise.
Conway Summit Aspen grove has a few yellow patches, but is mostly green, maybe a little lime green. Jordan Basin has a few beautiful yellow stands, but still a lot of green. Virginia Lakes Road has a few Aspen stands that look a little beaten up and with brown spots.
June Lake and Parker Mountain Side show some yellow.
The Aspen grove along Sherwin Creek Road has a lot of yellow color. It was already too late for me to take photos; this is a very early morning spot.
The hills above Hilton Creek are beautiful.
Best spot is Bishop Creek Canyon right now. Aspens along the road to Lake Sabrina are vibrant. (Still lots of green in Aspendell). Intake 2 has a beautiful colored hillside, have to try to catch it right at sunrise. The Aspen Grove behind Cardinal Village is kicking into gear, gorgeous. Lake Sabrina is sparkling with fall colors.
North Lake road is bursting with color. The big grove behind the lake is starting to show some color, but too early for any good shots
South Fork Bishop Creek starting at the Table Mountain Group Camp has lots of color.
Rock Creek Lake was disappointing; the Aspens above the lake look really beaten. There are some nice colors, but I was there at the wrong time of the day. There are still green groves along the road, so I have hope…..

It is windy and there are brown spots on leaves as well as black leaves everywhere I visited.  The last cold spell and the enormous wind have done a job on some of the trees.

That’s it for Saturday’s report. I will stay around Bishop Creek on Sunday, so no other report. When I drive back home on Monday I will swing by Convict Lake, maybe Lundy Canyon and let you know the status on Fall Color there.

Thanks for the pics and report, Inge! I haven't been that way in a few weeks, so maybe this weekend! Sounds like it might not last too long :(

Thank you,
It is always a crap shoot to try to predict how long it will last. I can say one thing though, there were a few trees with all ugly black leaves around and some of them appeared to have gone from green to black. Some of the trees looked dried out, with crispy leaves.

I will go back 9/30 to 10/8 to get more photos.
