Maybe a Douglas Squirrel? They are common here, but the info I saw on them shows a red-orange tint to the belly. This guy doesn't have one, so I'm not 100% sure.

That front view makes it difficult to be certain about but I'd guess a belding ground squirrel especially if it was taken at higher elevation meadows.

While the post leads to a site for squirrels in Washington State, it does have multiple photos of squirrels for identification.

This page also lists a common wildlife located at Yosemite...happy hunting.

Speculation aside, take a gander at the information and let us all know. I agree it is tough to identify a squirrel from the front, but the one in the photo is grey (gray), and found on the west coast...

While everybody is identifying the animal, I will say that it is a nice photograph! :)

Was going through an old box of Kodachromes today and noticed this image I shot at Thousand Island Lake in 1981 then remembered this thread:

Image

Really cute little bugger chewing on a piece of red stem fireweed. And I even remember thinking how unafraid she was. Amazing how our wonderful human minds can remember such distant in the past and mundane things when we simply see an old photo.
