Weather+mtn road conditions updates?Onion Valley,LakeSabrina

Post by DAVELA »

Anybody know with all the snow this past week if the roads are clear up to the trailheads of Mosquito Flats,Lake Sabrina,South LAke,North Lake,Big Pines Lakes/Palisades Glacier,Onion Valley?

Anybody know what the snow coverage is like above 9k feet in these areas?
Thinking of going up this weekend for some adventure.

thanks

Here in the town of Mammoth Lakes - 7900 feet, the recent series of "warm" storms brought us snow, rain, snow, rain...(essentially wet Sierra cement). At 8000 feet, maybe 1 foot of snow remains...a thin layer of solid ice over crusty mashed potatoes... post-hole fun. :unibrow:
Upper elevations hold up to 4 feet of fresh wet crusty snow - with snow conditions improving the higher you go up.

As for the back-country roads being open...not sure - better call, but recent warm days have dried/opened all the roads here around town, all good except for the morning black ice.

Skied up McGee Canyon in the rain yesterday. At the time it was raining to 10,000' (at least), but this morning I see a fresh dusting up high. Snow free to about 8,200', a foot by 9,000. Much less down south but I haven't been in the backcountry down there. I would be very surprised if you can't drive all the way to Onion Valley (unless for rockfall).

Rock Creek gated at East Fork, thin wet/icy snow.

Hilton Creek similar to McGee Creek with snow starting about 3/4 way up the switchbacks then getting deeper fast.
