JMT next season

Post by don norton »

I have heard that the hiker boxes at Muir Ranch have plenty of food in them. Wold I be crazy if I took a chance on finding enough there to get me to Whitney. I hope to start at Yosemite Valley

Not crazy but you should be comfortable with eating other peoples repackaged food. I have always avoided eating that stuff that I don't know how old it is or how it was handled. But that is all up to you. If you don't mind that then you should be good. Of course it does depend on the season as some times are better then others.

August is the best month to hit up the buckets because the JMT is most popular that month.

It just depends on how many days of food you need really.

You also have to be very flexible about what you will eat. When I went through there a couple years ago late july, there was plenty of food but not much selection - like many, many packets of instant oatmeal, numerous large packages of pasta. So if you are omnivorous enough, and willing to eat whatever happens to be in the buckets, it could be done. But I wouldn't want to do it myself.

On a side note, I was told the MTR hauled out over 300 full and nearly full supply buckets earlier this month. That's a freaking INSANE amount of waste..
