Suggestions for planning a trip in Kings Canyon/Sequoia

Post by JWERK »

I am trying to go backpacking in Kings Canyon/Sequoia in late July. I have never been to the park before, so I am looking for suggestions about good trail. I am open to suggestions for loops, in and out trips, and also one way trips, as I will probably have access to two cars. I plan on going for 3-5 days.

Yeah, give us more background. What is your experience? How many miles per day do you like? Do you want high alpine scenery, big canyons, lakes? Do you plan to enter on the west or east side?

A great source for trip ideas is Sierra South by Winnett et al. It has detailed trip suggestions and descriptions. It lets you know how hard, places to camp, etc. I have often used it to plan trips with great success.

I don't know what your skill level is but for 3-5 days in Kings Canyon, you could do the Rae Lakes Loop. I'm starting that next Saturday. It's all on trails and if you do it from Roads End then there is only one pass. I've heard it's pretty nice.

Rae Lakes is pretty nice - kind of an understatement.

There's a reason they limit how many nights you can stay there.
