Shipping backpacking gear before and after HST hike

Post by peekseeker01 »

Can anyone provide advise on shipping your backpacking gear before and after a High Sierra Trail Hike. I will be traveling from Atlanta to hike the HST, I plan on shipping my gear out to my hotel in Visalia to be there when I arrive from my flight which lands in Fresno. But I have a concern about how to ship it out after I exit via Whitney Portal. Is there a reliable UPS or FedX in Lone Pine that I can use to ship my pack back to Atlanta? I plan on flying back to Atlanta via Reno by taking the Crest bus from Lone Pine to Reno the day after I end my hike. Any other suggestions welcomed for handling backpacking gear is welcomed.

After doing a short web search, the Lone Pine Drug Store does FedEx shipping. If not there, there are a few places north of there, such as in Bishop, which I know for certain ship FedEx and UPS. Perhaps shipping your gear out of Reno might not be a bad idea either.

Worst case you just put your pack on the bus storage until Reno and ship it out there.

I don't give out specific route information, my belief is that it takes away from the whole adventure spirit of a trip, if you need every inch planned out, you'll have to get that from someone else.

Have a safer backcountry experience by using the HST ReConn Form 2.0, named after Larry Conn, a HST member: http://reconn.org

I can't add to the other responses for the exit shipping. However, I have a question - how do you plan to get from Fresno to Visalia? If you are going to use a bus or other public transportation, I work in Fresno and live in Visalia, and I'm more than happy to help out a fellow backpacker. If you are arriving in the afternoon/evening on a weekday, that would be a possibility (unless it's on a day when I'll be on the trail myself). You could even ship your gear to my house if there are snags with shipping to the hotel.

Thanks very much for the offer. I am planning on using Amtrak from Fresno to Visalia, it is a train then bus trip and fairly reasonable at $10.50. I am still not sure about how reliable it is to ship to the hotel in Visalia, so I am in the process of confirming that.

As for you offer, unfortunately I am arriving 8/18 in Fresno which is a Saturday. I am picking up my reserved permit Sunday and then starting my hike Monday.

I guess I would just bite the bullet and pay for the extra baggage on the return trip. You have no need to carry gas (not allowed on planes) and with all the food gone, you may even be able to get everything inside the pack for one piece of luggage. It certainly would simplify things.
