Lyell Fork camping question

Post by varnes-epstein »

Ok, the planning continues. After leaving Tuolumne, can we camp at the lower lyell canyon camp area or, because of bears, are we supposed to camp at upper lyell canyon campground?

Regarding Lyell Canyon...the regs say 4 miles up (south) from Tuolumne HSC -
or farther - all relatively flat trail for ~7 miles in. There are good established sites along the river - good fishing - where the Ireland Lake trail splits off.
Bring a bear can - required!

I've camped in the Lyell a couple of times in the last few years. Always at least 4 miles out, but about 1/2 mile to 1 mile away from the Ireland Creek TJ. Haven't been bothered with bears so far. (I have camped at the sites at the TJ before, and was always hit by the bears).
