Ok, the planning continues. After leaving Tuolumne, can we camp at the lower lyell canyon camp area or, because of bears, are we supposed to camp at upper lyell canyon campground?

Regarding Lyell Canyon...the regs say 4 miles up (south) from Tuolumne HSC -
or farther - all relatively flat trail for ~7 miles in. There are good established sites along the river - good fishing - where the Ireland Lake trail splits off.
Bring a bear can - required!
