June 19th, Rancheria--Crown Valley?

Post by funhog »

Mrs. Funhog and I were hoping to get a week of backpacking in starting at the Rancheria--Crown Valley trailhead. I guess the $64,000 question is will enough snow be gone to allow a hiking trip?

Initially we had thought a jaunt into Tehipite Valley would be to our liking but it seems crossing Crown Creek is going to be dangerous.

So do you think we can sneak into the Geraldine Lakes or get up to the Kettle Ridge?

I see the Western Woodchuck Meadow snow observation station shows 20 inches of snow and declining rapidly at this point.

Thanks for your insights!

We just returned from our backpack. First snow on trail found about 8,200 to 8,400 feet. More on north sides and on shady portions of trail. It wasn't much of an issue to hike in the snow and stay on the trail. With the heat, snow was melting quickly.

Stream crossings were an issue. We had wanted to hike up to Spanish Lake but that wasn't going to happen. Crossing at Rancheria Creek was a bit much for us. The normal trail crossing seemed a bit deep (waste to chest high) and the log crossing up stream seemed ominous (swift water), so we decided to head to cabin creek for the night.

We hiked down into Tehipite Canyon and were thwarted by Crown Creek, no surprise there. The word we had was it was going to be 60 feet across, moving swiftly and hip to chest deep. Never tested the word but I wouldn't argue with it either.

Nonetheless, six days on trail, didn't see a soul and it was quiet. Can't beat a trip like that!
