Deadman's Canyon

Post by blipstream »

Finalizing a trip plan for a loop through Deadman's Canyon, looking for recommendations on spots to camp in or along the Canyon.

Also, haven't seen much on recent trail conditions through the canyon or over Elizabeth pass so any recent info would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Blipstream,
I've not camped in Deadman (superstitious?), but for a little extra effort, you can get to Big Bird Lake or Lonely Lake and I've had good experiences at both. The East side of Lonely lake has a nice grassy meadow with a sandy beach and you'll probably only hit a couple icebergs in late July!!! Good campsites at the outflow of Big Bird, too.

I have camped in Ranger Meadow (what a view) and also at Big Bird Lake, and it's
outlet, all make for great camping, but do be prepared for a lot of mosquito's
especially in Ranger Meadow!
Here is a cool TR that will give you an idea: http://www.doylewdonehoo.com/deadman/dead1.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I don't give out specific route information, my belief is that it takes away from the whole adventure spirit of a trip, if you need every inch planned out, you'll have to get that from someone else.

A bit past Ranger Meadow there is great campsite with water on your right side. I don't recall exactly how far past the meadow, but you can't miss it. I went further up and camped below the pass where the big boulders are. It was a bit too early for me to stop.
