Star Photography

Post by maverick »

For those of you who have thought about it, or for those who had dabbled in it on
occasion, here is an interesting article, which includes calculations based on
air temps, back ground glow, star counts to optimize your success at getting the
right exposure, and beat noise, without raising your ISO, located in the middle of the
article. http://blog.starcircleacademy.com/2010/ ... for-stars/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Other relevant articles on this site are also worth the read.

I don't give out specific route information, my belief is that it takes away from the whole adventure spirit of a trip, if you need every inch planned out, you'll have to get that from someone else.

Have a safer backcountry experience by using the HST ReConn Form 2.0, named after Larry Conn, a HST member: http://reconn.org

ya, those are fun.
i did my first one back in the 70's using kodachrome & a campfire to light up a tree in the foreground.

i really like some of the modern ones being done with hi-def cameras that you see on some of the discovery/national geo channel programs (i think dual survival does a lot of that)

here's an all-nighter i did with 4x5 sheet film (not the best of scans):

exposure is around 6-7 hours @ f5.6 with a few hours of crescent moonlight to light up the great western divide

Thanks, Mav. I bookmarked it.

Here's one of my favorite star pics I took a few years ago at Vogelsang

(Oh well, doesn't look like webshots will allow this...maybe later)

Here's one with Whaleback in silhouette. Probably about a 4 hour exposure, using Tri-x 400 pushed one stop. This is a bad scan from a neg.

My 2009 attempt at not having star trails...and having a foreground object.

1989 at Mono Lake - not trails, but also not sharp stars. All I did was put the old Nikkormat on full auto and let her rip.

last year on Island pass - camera on a rock, about 15 minutes. Got a little fuzzy due to the dew that was building up on the lense edges. resizing turned the start tracks into jaggies -gotta redo this one in Photoshop properly and not leave it up to the album software.

This is one of my first attempts at shooting the night sky. The photo is from September of 2010, shot while visiting Yosemite NP.
