We are Level 2-3 backpackers--extensive Sierra trail back-packing experience, but cross-country mostly as day hikes, competent w/topo map, but not skilled w/compass, and no gear/experience for rope-assisted climbing or snow.
This August 11-21st, we are leading a small group of generally fit friends with similar or less experience on a backpack trip from Kearsarge to Bishop Pass along the JMT. We're thinking about leaving the JMT at the southern-most of the Rae Lakes on a trail marked on our Harrison map to head west to Sixty Lake Basin, and then cross-country north through the Basin, re-joining the JMT somewhere between Dollar Lake and Baster Creek.
From the map, the terrain doesn't look terribly steep or difficult, and our trail guides make Sixty Lake Basin sound more appealing than competing with the crowds for camping space in the Rae Lakes area. But our schedule doesn't allow for any extra days for back-tracking in case Sixty Lakes Basin is still snowy, or a route through the north end to re-join the JMT is too dicey or hard to find.
Any advice much appreciated!
