Summer Comes to Southern California

Post by quentinc »

Tired of 20 degree nights and snow flurries in the Southern Sierra, I decided to opt for the benign climate of the local mountains northeast of downtown Los Angeles.

This is what it looked like on Sunday morning:

When Hell freezes over, it's hard to know where you're heading:

I think it was Mt. Baden-Powell (view from the top):

The weather also revealed an improved way to protect food from bears:

It took me 10 minutes to scrape my way in. I also made the mistake of letting my backpack stick out from the tent vestibule a bit:

Maybe I'll try the desert next.

Talking about putting your food on ice, wow that is cool!
Love the icy pine tree, and especially the sign!

I don't give out specific route information, my belief is that it takes away from the whole adventure spirit of a trip, if you need every inch planned out, you'll have to get that from someone else.

Those pictures remind me of a day I spent skiing at Mt Baldy a few years back, in midwinter - fun conditions on the upper part of the mountain, where I took several pictures similar to yours, except the ground was covered by snow. Oh, but the lower part of the mountain that day was treacherous, and I felt lucky to get to my truck relatively unscathed.

That same day, Sunday June 5, I was working down in the valley below, at Fairplex in Pomona, where we had our Pomona Swap Meet and Classic Car Show going, and hoped that the potential for weather (which you obviously experienced) would pass us by (which it did).
Cheers,
Herm

Looks like for us so cal lowlanders that June Gloom has hit. It always makes me antsy in anticipation of the coming summer, which by the way, never really arrived last year for us coastal folks. :-({|=

It wasn't a weather phenomenon I'd ever seen before. Based on Wikipedia, it seems to be what's called hard rime. As in, "it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard rime's a-gonna fall."
