We left our most of our gear at trail crest a few years ago. We did not have any problem. Just make sure and bring with you everything you might need for the hike out. I would never want to be without my emergency gear if somebody walked away with the rest of my stuff.

I think there is a big difference between "backpackers" and "hikers". I have found that the further into the wilderness you are, the more respectful people tend to be. Quite a few "hikers" on the way up that Whitney trail!

The problems we have with thiefs are at the trailheads, not in the backcountry.
