Carrizo Plain Wild Flowers

Post by doug395 »

I went out to Carrizo Plain last Sunday and Monday, things are super green and the flowers are pretty spectacular right now. The best places I found were on Soda Lake rd between the Education Center and the 58, and from Soda Lake rd about 20 miles west on the 58 to Shell Creek rd. Things are going off in different stages so it should stay good for the next few weeks, but the grasses are starting to take over in some areas.
Here’s some trip pics.

Great pics Doug! I was thinking of making a trip down there this weekend or the next. You've definitely encouraged me...

Doug, those are suh-weet!!! I really wanna go down there and get some flower images and kayak Soda Lake (just because it's unique), but man, it's a long ways away from Sacramento and with the price of gas right now I would have to rob a bank to get down there.

Doug,
Absolutely beautiful. I have pushed out my wild flower trips this year due to the weather, but it looks sweet down south right now. Have to think about going soon. Thank you for sharing!

Almost ran into you again!

Gee not only Carrizo pics but also Shell Creek in your folder. Nice pics as usual especially that closeup of poppies, tidy tips, and baby blue eyes. Monday sunrise as the tail end of the last storm was moving east and finally a forecast of some fair weather, I drove south from the Bay Area and shot Shell Creek till midday then drove off to Carrizo late afternoon. Given the look of those clouds in your pics, I'm guessing you were also at Shell Creek Monday morning. As I was crossing east over the creek on a wobbly log, I did see a couple of tripod toting guys on the north side of that area? Else there were just a few people there during the day. Exposed 7 each 4x5 sheets all from areas west of the road near midday. Some nice poppies and baby blue eyes though not the thick jungle of wildflowers there last year.

Later Monday afternoon when the wind kicked up, I drove out to Carrizo and shot there Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday with Thursday in the Gaskell Road area of Antelope Valley. A great week of mostly blue skies without the usual photographer's torment of wind. Tuesday was the calmest morning, enough so that I got some nice static closeups and reflections in what I call Old Potato Lake or Ann at the Carrizo visitor center call "East Pond". Wednesday afternoon, also billy goated up to some unworldly Gorman-like color in the Temblor Range. I exposed a whopping 44 sheets of Provia. Really excited about seeing the results when my film comes back Monday afternoon. In the mean time, here are three Coolpix shots.

Wahhhhhhhh!!!

You got good photograph sense gal.
I'm a photo moron sometimes!

Why didn't I bother to set my 4x5 up on that shot? Well guess I was on a thin diet Thursday morning as I just exposed 3 frames in the three hours I was out shooting. All good ones they will be so it will not be so painful not getting the dirt road. At the time I spied some joshua trees in the distance that I was too eager to frame in a shot with poppies. Well lesson learned so will just have to wait till the next bloom. At least I know the spot. That is so pretty a spot. Would be nice to have some expensive red sports car sitting right there too hah!

David – I was in Carrizo Sunday Morning with off and on rain and Shell Creek later in the day, the rain kicked in big time late Sunday. Monday morning I drove back to Shell Creek and spent most of the day there, nice partly cloudy skies but slow shooting in the wind. We must have been in the same area on Monday, my white 4Runner was parked along the Shell Creek road most of the day. I was going to head back to Carrizo but it got really windy, so I headed to the coast and stayed at Montana de Oro. Looks like you got the good weather, look forward to seeing those images. I’m making my first trip to Santa Rosa Island next week, looking forward to wondering around a green island.

Do recall seeing a white SUV so that was you walking west back towards the creek while I was moving out east. Best of luck out on Santa Rosa, ought to be pretty exciting ride out and back too. A LF climber friend of mine wants to drive down to Carrizo when the next nice weather forecast for Friday and the weekend sets up. So I'm leaning towards joining him and if so will be certain to do another afternoon billy goat climb or two up into the Temblor heights. Carrizo is just now reaching peak and Temblor will even peak later. Surprising how many new flowers popped out of their buds in just the period between Monday and Friday when I was there. Getting sunshine and calm air is absolutely critical to having a chance at good highly detailed images the larger one's format. Last spring, despite nailing some incredible images, most of my time was waiting for the clouds to leave and or wind to stop. So last week was just extraordinary good luck. Montana de Oro still too green I'd expect? I'd like to hit that park if the renowned goldfield crop ever makes a spring appearance. Reports along the Northern California coast are that few flowers have made an appearance so its looks like there will be a lot to shoot in May that normally is nice in April.
