North Cascades National Park- Sahale Peak

Post by Sarvesh »

Here are some pix from a climb I did a little while ago. We hiked up the Cascade Pass trail and then continued up Sahale Arm to the base of the Glacier. We did this as a day hike and it was a long one, as we got started at the butt crack of dawn. Here is a shot of Johannesburg from the Cascade Pass Trail.

What a great trip to one of the most stunningly beautiful places in the world. If you are ever in Washington take the Cascade Pass trail to the Sahale Arm trail, the views from high on the arm are spectacular. It's a nice day hike, 12 miles round trip with about 4000' elevation gain...add another 1000 feet to get to the summit...some seriously exposed class 4, maybe one low class 5 section of climbing and minor glacier travel involved...it's an airy summit!

Sahale is a great little climb, with fabulous views and with a pretty welcoming approach which is rare in the North Cascades. Can do it in a day- one of the first trips I went on with my wife- but that was almost twenty years ago!

Holy smokes- while digging through a box of old pics, found one of me 'n' the wife on Sahale Pk., from July '91. Must have been a warm day- as I recall the bugs were pretty bad hiking out.
