Bear cub stuck with head in a jar for 10 days is freed

Grab your bear can or camp chair, kick your feet up and chew the fat about anything Sierra Nevada related that doesn't quite fit in any of the other forums. Within reason, (and the HST rules and guidelines) this is also an anything goes forum. Tell stories, discuss wilderness issues, music, or whatever else the High Sierra stirs up in your mind.

In this July 31, 2010 photo released by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, two black bear cubs, one with a jug on its head, run along a roadway in Ocala National Forest, FL.

Hey, Boo Boo, that's not a picnic basket on your head!

After 10 days of having his head stuck, a little black bear can finally breathe easy again.

The six-month old cub, nicknamed "Jarhead," was rooting around in the trash in central Florida when it nosed his way into a clear plastic container and couldn't get out.

The cub was trapped that way for nearly two weeks, unable to eat or drink.

Responding to reports from nearby residents who had spotted the cub, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) sent a team, including a bear-response agent, to the area to intervene.

But finding the elusive bear was "a lot easier said than done," said the biologists, who knew the cub would die if they couldn't free it from the jar.

Though the bear and its family - the cub was traveling with its mother and two siblings - were spotted for eight days in a row, they eluded traps and then disappeared for two days.

The team feared the cub had starved to death, but just as they were ready to give up, the bears returned.

Biologists had to shoot the cub's fiercely protective mother with a tranquilizer dart so they could tackle Jarhead and remove the...

Yeah it does look like a bear vault at first glance, but then the threads on the collar
look to big.

And the bear cub on the right looks like something out of a Disney animation. I find this story just a trifle suspicious. A bear can survive for 10 days without water?

Your right Q, now that Im taking a better look the front bear looks like
two separate photo's combined.
Look at the color difference, front of the bear is black and the back is
grayish/black, and then the obvious line separating the colors.
Also the rear is much more in focus as opposed to the blurry front part.

There's no motive to photoshop such a photo, and the camera wasn't like a DSLR out there; these are fish and game people. The shadows under the bears seem to match time of day. If you didn't have water for 10 days, you might not be moving fast, whereas the lead bear was on a mid bolt. As for coat color.. That mark on his back is a swirl of color. Not all bears are of a solid color which depends mostly on which way the fur grows, and if you compare his front left ear and the rear rump, same refraction.

Conspiracy theorists.. :p Next someone might take that photo and overlay some lightning over from bear to bear.. :D

still think the bear was lucky to make it 10 days w/o water.

Let me add that the movement is not bear like, and I believe that it is a dog in
a bear suit, and the line at the middle of the bear is just a poor attempt to attach
the two pieces together, how's that for conspiracy theory?
No collars, so lightening would not be believable, though I guess that could be added to
as could some sparks, could make an interesting photo's Russ, thanks.
